Antithyroid peroxidase antibodies (AB-TPO) are proteins that are formed in the body against an enzyme in thyroid cells (thyroid peroxidase). This enzyme is involved in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The appearance of antibodies to it indicates autoimmune processes (autoaggression), when the body “attacks” its own thyroid cells.

When can the level of (AB-TPO) be elevated?

• In 90-95% of patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (in particular, chronic autoimmune thyroiditis of Hashimoto).
• In 80% of patients with diffuse toxic goiter (Graves' disease).
• In 15-20% of cases with non-autoimmune thyroid diseases (various pathologies not related to immune aggression).
