Fibrinogen is synthesized in the liver and has many functions. It is plasma coagulation factor I, and its conversion to fibrin under the action of thrombin is the final stage of clot formation. Fibrinogen is also involved in platelet aggregation, determines blood viscosity, and affects the interaction of blood cells with the vascular wall. Fibrinogen belongs to the proteins of the acute phase of inflammation.
