Indirect Coombs test is a laboratory test that allows you to detect antibodies to red blood cells in the patient's serum. The test is used to detect unexpected antibodies to ABO- and Rh-compatible red blood cells. Agglutination of red blood cells in the test shows the presence of antibodies in the serum that cause a reaction with antigens on the surface of reagent red blood cells.
The main indications for conducting an indirect Coombs test:
- Determination of individual blood compatibility of the donor and recipient.
- Detection of alloantibodies (antibodies that cause hemolytic transfusion reactions).
- Determination of surface red blood cell antigens in medical genetics and forensic medicine.
- Confirmation of identical twins in bone marrow transplantation.
Patient preparation rules:
- 4 hours before the analysis: refrain from eating, exclude fatty foods.
- You can drink water.
- Do not smoke 1 hour before the analysis.
- 15 minutes before the test, exclude physical exertion and stress.
- For children under 1 year old, it is advisable to observe the maximum possible interval between feedings or donate blood before the next feeding.
