Direct Coombs test is a laboratory test that detects anti-erythrocyte antibodies fixed on red blood cells. This test is used to diagnose various types of hemolysis and diseases associated with a violation of the normal process of red blood cell breakdown.
Main indications for a direct Coombs test
- Autoimmune hemolysis is a process when the immune system attacks its own red blood cells.
- Hemolytic disease of the newborn is a condition in which maternal antibodies destroy the red blood cells of the newborn.
- Drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia is anemia caused by a reaction to certain medications.
- Hemolytic transfusion reactions are complications that occur after a blood transfusion that does not match the patient's group.
Patient preparation rules:
- 4 hours before the test: refrain from eating, exclude fatty foods.
- You can drink water.
- Do not smoke 1 hour before the test.
- 15 minutes before the test, exclude physical exertion and stress.
- For children under 1 year old, it is advisable to observe the maximum possible interval between feedings or donate blood before the next feeding.
