Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment method in which radio waves are used to create heat and destroy part of the nerve. The procedure is used to destroy the endings of the small nerves that provide sensation to the facet joints. Once the nerve is destroyed, you should no longer experience pain caused by worn or painful facet joints. This procedure is also sometimes called RFA (short for radiofrequency ablation), rhizotomy, or neurotomy.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, it can also be performed under intravenous sedation.
