ENT endoscopy

In otorhinolaryngology, endoscopy is recognized as the gold standard for the diagnosis of diseases of the nose, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx in children and adults. It is also used for many minimally invasive interventions, the effectiveness of which sometimes exceeds the effect of classical ENT operations.

ENT endoscopy is an examination of internal organs and cavities with an endoscope, a special device equipped with a video camera that is inserted into the body through natural pathways (mouth, nose, ear) or through small skin punctures and transmits images to a monitor screen. As a result, the doctor visually observes the condition of the ENT organs (image, in addition, can be enlarged). This method is one of the most informative methods for diagnosing diseases such as polyps, adenoids, cysts, a curvature of the nasal septum, sinusitis, rhinitis. The device allows you to reach areas that can not be seen with the naked eye or with a mirror.

You can carry out ENT endoscopy in Kiev in the Dobrobut network of medical clinics. Only here you will receive European-level service at an affordable price. Qualified otolaryngologists, proven techniques, and the use of the latest equipment make the procedure absolutely safe and highly effective. You can find out the full list of services and their cost on the website.

When is the ENT endoscopy performed?

The list of indications for endoscopy in otorhinolaryngology is very wide. The reason for using endoscopy can be:

  • runny nose with a discharge of various nature, including in the absence of signs of acute viral infection;
  • unilateral or bilateral nasal congestion;
  • snore;
  • the constant humming of the voice;
  • decreased sense of smell;
  • pain near the nose, deep in the nasopharynx, in the orbit;
  • permanent or recurrent (recurrent) ear congestion, hearing loss;
  • frequent colds with a tendency to prolonged colds;
  • "Naphthyzin dependence";
  • diagnosed with chronic adenoiditis, adenoid growths;
  • tendency to nosebleeds;
  • discomfort, pain, sore throat, recurrent "throat" cough;
  • suffered injuries of the facial skull, nose.

The endoscopic examination will help identify diseases and factors such as:

  • formation of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx: polyps, cysts;
  • adenoids;
  • rhinitis (vasomotor, hypertrophic);
  • the curvature of the nasal septum;
  • a foreign body in the nasal cavity;
  • acute and chronic sinusitis (sinusitis, etc.);
  • mucocele;
  • collection of material for further research.

ENT endoscopy is prescribed before surgery in the nasal cavity, sinuses, and nasopharynx, and in the postoperative period.

What are the contraindications to endoscopy?

There are often no absolute contraindications for the endoscopic procedure. Relative contraindications include:

  • the presence of an allergic reaction to lidocaine and other analgesics used for local anesthesia;
  • tendency to nosebleeds. If the patient is prone to nosebleeds, the doctor should be notified. In this situation, the procedure is performed with the thinnest endoscope;
  • hypersensitivity of the mucous membrane;
  • reduced ability to coagulate blood;
  • "Fragility" of blood vessels;
  • some neurotic disorders.

How is the endoscopic diagnostic examination of the ENT organs?

Diagnostic endoscopy of the nose and nasopharynx does not require hospitalization. This is an outpatient procedure that can be performed urgently and routinely. With the appropriate equipment, it is usually included in the program of routine patient visits to the clinic for initial diagnosis or for monitoring.

In adults, painkillers (anesthetics) are usually used for diagnostic endoscopy - lidocaine (as a spray). Local anesthesia is also used during endoscopic ENT operations.

The procedure is as follows:

  • The patient sits down in a chair and throws his head back - this allows free access for the movement of the endoscope;
  • Depending on which organ needs to be examined (ear, nose, larynx), the doctor inserts the device into it. If necessary, first inject an analgesic (if the patient is a child or has tissue hypersensitivity);
  • The specialist moves the device from the examined organ and monitors the image on the monitor;
  • The results are stored and recorded on magnetic media and can also be printed;
  • Timely detected pathology allows you to prescribe the optimal and most effective treatment.

What procedures are performed during ENT endoscopy?

Endoscopic polysinusotomy

Endoscopic polysinusotomy (FESS - Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) is an endoscopic operation

performed in chronic hypertrophic rhinosinusitis, mucocele, hemisinusitis, pansinusitis, the presence of a foreign body, cysts, and other pathologies of the nasal cavity and sinuses. During the operation, the anastomosis expands, which makes it possible to examine the sinuses.

Endoscopic septoplasty

This is a careful surgical method that allows under the control of optics to correct the deformed nasal septum in disorders of facial bone growth, hereditary predisposition, injuries.

Simultaneously with septoplasty, correction of hypertrophied nasal sinuses, removal of polyps, rehabilitation of the paranasal sinuses are possible.

Endoscopic adenotomy

Indications for removal of adenoids include persistent nasal breathing difficulties, frequent colds, snoring, hearing loss, and deformity of the facial skeleton. Endoscopic adenotomy is performed when conservative treatment is ineffective. During the operation, the tonsil tissue is completely removed.

Vasotomy of the nasal concha

The procedure is performed by coagulation of hypertrophied areas of the lower nasal sinuses, which allows the preservation of the functional structures of the nasal passages. Also performed submucosal vasotomy with lateral position of the nasal sinuses, bipolar coagulation, radiowave coagulation.

How is the recovery period after surgery?

Complete recovery after endoscopic surgery of the ENT organs usually takes from 5-7 days to 2-3 weeks. During this period, the patient should come to the clinic for examination. From two weeks to a month thermal procedures (bath, sauna), active physical activities, flights are not recommended.

At carrying out the endoscopic procedure by our expert's postoperative complications arise extremely seldom. The pain is relieved by anesthesia. During the insertion of the endoscope, the patient may feel a slight pressure, which is not dangerous. Usually, a flexible tool is used, which eliminates injury to the mucous membrane.

What are the benefits of ENT endoscopy?

Endoscopic examination methods in the ENT organs have a number of advantages:

  • wide diagnostic possibilities;
  • no need for prior patient preparation;
  • obtaining the result directly during the study;
  • low level of discomfort;
  • safety (such diagnostics is not associated with the use of radiation, does not disrupt the ENT organs, and can even be used for examination of children);
  • short duration;
  • the possibility of performing surgical interventions.
