Fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy (FEGDS) is a highly informative endoscopic procedure that allows the doctor to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (part of the small intestine).

For the study, a fibroendoscope is used - a flexible tube with illumination and a small camera. This allows you to examine the inner surface of the mucous membrane of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum.

When may you need to perform FEGDS?

You may need fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy if the patient has unexplained:
  • abdominal pain;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • bleeding in the upper digestive tract;
  • trouble swallowing;
  • weight loss.

What diseases can be diagnosed by FEGDS?

Fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy allows direct examination of the mucosa and biopsy. With the help of research, the following diagnoses can be made:

  • acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD);
  • malignant and benign tumors;
  • inflammatory diseases such as esophagitis, gastritis, and duodenitis;
  • celiac disease or Crohn's disease;
  • stomach ulcer;
  • swallowing disorders.

FEGDS allows not only diagnostic manipulations but also therapeutic ones:

  • control bleeding from the upper digestive tract;
  • stretch narrowed digestive tracts;
  • remove polyps, tumors, or swallowed objects.

How to prepare for the examination?

Before FEGDS, the patient will need to follow special preparation instructions. For our specialists to have a better view of the digestive tract, the procedure should be performed on an empty stomach. You can discuss the specifics of preparation with our doctors at the Dobrobut Medical Center.

How is fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy performed in Ukraine?

FEGDS is usually performed on an outpatient basis, that is, the patient goes home the same day. During the procedure, he may experience discomfort, but the examination itself is painless. During the procedure, the patient lies on his left side, it lasts about 30 minutes. The research is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. An anesthetic spray is applied to your throat and a mouthguard is inserted to protect your teeth.
  2. The endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
  3. Air is pumped through the endoscope into the stomach and duodenum to make it easier to see the organs.
  4. In the process of searching for a problem or performing the necessary manipulations, the mucous membrane is visualized.
  5. If necessary, a small piece of tissue is taken for examination (biopsy).

If medication sleep was used, the patient is transferred to a ward under observation for several hours, after which, at the end of the effect of the medication, you immediately go home.
