Lumpectomy

Lumpectomy (sectoral resection of the mammary gland) is an organ-preserving operation, the essence of which is the removal of the pathological focus of the breast while preserving healthy tissues. Indications for lumpectomy are benign breast neoplasms, as well as the initial stages of malignant neoplasms. This technique allows achieving positive results in the treatment of breast cancer and maintaining the original shape and volume of the organ while maintaining breast sensitivity, a low risk of complications, and a short recovery period.

Operation progress

The tissue is removed within a radius of 10 mm around the tumor. Drainage is being installed. Then the wound is either sutured or covered with sterile material until the results of the morphological examination are obtained.

Lumpectomy usually lasts no more than 1 hour.

After lumpectomy, a course of radiation therapy is necessarily prescribed to destroy microscopic small cancer colonies that remain in the area of the operation or nearby lymph nodes and reduce local recurrence.
