Ear toilet

Call-center

An ear toilet is a medical and hygienic procedure for cleaning the external auditory canal by specialists from earplugs, purulent formations, crusts, or foreign objects.

What is earwax?

Earwax is a yellow, waxy substance that is formed by the sebaceous glands of the ear canal. Sulfur protects against the ingress of water, foreign bodies (dust, dirt, insects). Normally, sulfur, which is formed in the external auditory canal, physiologically goes out by itself.

Therefore, do not use earplugs, pins, hairpins, or other devices to remove earwax. Do not try to remove the wax from the ear canal yourself! You can remove the wax by showering or washing your face with a soapy fingertip at the opening of your ear canal.

When can earplugs form?

In some people, the wax may build up in excess or accumulate in the ear canal, causing earplugs to form and blockage.

But the reasons for the formation of earplugs can also be the human factor:
  • the use of cotton swabs, hairpins for cleaning the ear canal;
  • swimming leads to excess sulfur formation;
  • frequent use of such devices as earplugs, hearing aids, cotton swabs, which leads to excessive accumulation of earwax.

Which patient categories are prone to excessive sulfur production?

  • the presence of hair in the ear canal;
  • frequent ear infections;
  • a history of earplugs;
  • bony formations of the ear canal were diagnosed;
  • narrow ear canal;
  • elderly patients: the properties of earwax change with age.

What are the indications for the procedure?

Conducting a toilet on the ears is performed if the following symptoms are present:
  • hearing loss;
  • prolonged tinnitus;
  • own voice in the ears (autophony);
  • dizziness;
  • ear pain;
  • itching of the external auditory canal.

The decision to carry out the procedure is made only by a specialist in each case individually.

When is it contraindicated to hold a toilet on the ears?

Ear toilet is contraindicated in the presence of a perforation of the eardrum or an acute inflammatory process.

How is the ear canal toilet performed?

The specialists of our clinic carry out the toilet of the ear canal in two ways:

  • dry method;
  • wet method.

Before using one of the methods, preliminary preparation is carried out, the doctor examines the outer ear, assesses the condition of the tympanic membrane. If necessary, the entrance to the ear is cleaned with antiseptics from pus or dirt.

After the first procedure, the patient will feel better.

Features of holding the ear toilet dry

The duration of the procedure is about 10 minutes. This is painless and safe manipulation since the probe is processed at a depth of about 2-3 cm.

For cleaning, a special device is used - a probe, on the tip of which cotton wool is wound. Under visual control (otoscope), the ENT cleans the walls of the ear canal, gently blotting out pus or sulfur. At the same time, regularly change the sterile cotton wool until it is completely clean.

Features of holding the ear toilet with a wet method

The duration of the procedure is about 20 minutes. This is an painless and safe procedure.

For the procedure, a special large syringe or a special device (electric irrigator) is used. Before the procedure, in 7-10 minutes, special preparations or hydrogen peroxide are used to soften the sulfur, which is instilled into the ear, after which the patient lies on his side. Ear rinsing is performed using warm saline or high-pressure antiseptic, while the doctor pulls the earlobe backward.
