Videocolonoscopy is a highly informative, modern method of examining the inside of the colon along its entire length to detect changes or abnormalities in the colon and rectum using a special flexible camera (colonoscope).

Today, videocolonoscopy is recognized as the "gold standard" for colon cancer screening. If necessary during an examination, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed with an endoscope during videocolonoscopy.

When do you need to perform a videocolonoscopy?

Colonoscopy should be done as a routine screening test, especially in people with polyps, a history of inflammatory bowel disease, or in people with a family history of colon cancer after age 45.

Indications for videocolonoscopy may include the following symptoms:
  • bleeding from the anus;
  • unexplained anemia;
  • change in bowel habits;
  • abdominal pain;
  • chronic diarrhea or constipation;
  • weight loss;
  • mucus in the stool;
  • suspicion of intestinal polyposis.

How to prepare for the study?

  • A bowel laxative should be taken the day before the videocolonoscopy.
  • Before videocolonoscopy, exclude gas-forming foods (vegetables, fruits, dairy products, juices, and soda) from the diet.
  • Before the procedure, a cleansing enema is performed in several ways:
  1. using an enema - in the evening on the eve of the study and in the morning 2 hours before the study;
  2. the use of microclysters (rectal laxatives) - a few hours before the study.

The main condition for the study is the complete emptying of the colon (sigmoid) and rectum.

Our experienced MN Dobrobut specialists in Kyiv will provide you with more detailed instructions on what you can eat and drink before the procedure.

How is the research done?

The study is performed under general anesthesia or sedation (the patient is asleep during the study). The duration of the procedure on average takes about 20-30 minutes.

Videocolonoscopy is performed lying on the left side, with the knees pulled up to the abdomen. A colonoscope is inserted into the anus.

The videocolonoscope is long enough to cover the entire colon and contains a video camera and a tube (channel) that allows the doctor to pump air or carbon dioxide into the colon. Air or carbon dioxide inflates the colon, which provides a better view of the colon lining.

When the machine is moved or air is introduced, the patient may feel abdominal cramps or an urge to defecate.

The colonoscope contains a tiny video camera at the end, from which it sends images to an external monitor, where the intestinal mucosa is visualized in great detail.

The results of the research by the specialists of the Dobrobut Medical Center are issued immediately after the videoanoscopy within 1 hour.

How is the recovery period going?

After the procedure, the patient is monitored for about an hour. Then he can return to normal life. He will need an escort so that someone can take him home. The patient should also avoid drinking alcohol, driving, or working for 24 hours.

How can you sign up for a study at our clinic?
