Causes, symptoms, treatment of adenophlegmon

Adenophlegmon is an acute generalized purulent process developing in the subcutaneous tissue in immediate proximity to lymph nodes. Surgeon dentists and maxillofacial surgeons supervise patients with such a diagnosis.

Adenophlegmon of the submandibular space is one of the most common type of the pathology.

The reasons for the development of the pathology

Formation of an acute purulent process in the subcutaneous fat layer next to lymph nodes can be provoked by a significant decrease in immunity. If there is a lymph node inflammation, delayed lymph outflow and increased vascular permeability may be noticed.

Adenophlegmons develop due to current inflammatory processes of any localization. Often such a pathology is diagnosed against the background of malignant tumors, some types of dermatitis, dental pathologies in chronic form, tonsillitis.

Diagnostics is aimed at not only the detection of adenophlegmon, but the determination of the reason for its occurrence as it defines medical tactics for this pathology.

Symptoms of various types of adenophlegmon

Symptomatology depends on the location of adenophlegmon development.

In case of submandibular adenophlegmon, body temperature rises, difficulty swallowing is possible, speech problems occur, swelling forms in the affected area, there is redness of the skin and soreness when palpating.

In case of neck adenophlegmon, the symptoms arise only if there is a critical assembly of coccal microflora in the tissues of anterior or lateral part of the neck. Elevation of body temperature; soreness when palpating of the neck, redness of the skin occur, but there may be no swelling.

Symptoms are similar for various types of the pathology examined, the differences are only in the localization of the lesion. In case of children’s adenophlegmon, loss of appetite, hypersomnia, atony, no interest to games and people around are observed.

Treatment of adenophlegmon

The problem can be solved with comprehensive treatment:
  • lancing of the suppurative focus is performed under local or general anesthesia;
  • sanitation;
  • a drain tube without wound suturing is placed;
  • a sterile dressing that should be mandatorily replaced once a day is applied.

Antibiotics are used for the treatment of adenophlegmon, not only in the form of pills or injections, but also locally, for the abscess cavity lavage.

The prognosis is favorable with a timely request for qualified medical care. But we must not forget that there is a high risk of sepsis.

On our website you can find the information on the cases when adenophlegmon of the mouth floor is developed, and what are the special aspects of treatment of the disease to know.
