What to do in case of ringing in the ears and otalgia

Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) is a symptom, not a disease. Tinnitus arises when external sound stimuli are absent, and can be unilateral or bilateral. Why does the impulse noise in the ears arise? It can be derived from the perception of the sanguimotion in inner ear vessels and be felt in case of complete silence. It is considered a physiologic case. Pathologic tinnitus is a symptom of a disease. Of about 8 % of adult population constantly experiences ringing in the ears.

Causes of intense ringing in the ears

Ringing in the ears can vary as for its character and intensity, be continuous or arise periodically. Patients describe tinnitus as a high-pitch constant sound, turbine noise, tinkling, hissing, splutter, clicks, etc.

Causes of intense ringing in the ears:
  • diseases of middle and inner ear;
  • Injury of the vestibulocochlear nerve responsible for sound transmission from ear to brain;
  • disseminated sclerosis and other neurological diseases provoking muscle spasms;
  • Meniere disease;
  • otosclerosis;
  • acoustic traumas, barotraumas;
  • ringing and buzzing in the ears of elderly people is related to the aging process and diminished hearing;
  • osteochondrosis;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • thyroid diseases;
  • neurocirculatory dystonia;
  • cerebral atherosclerosis;
  • brain tumors;
  • intoxications;
  • stress.

Nerve strain provoked by tinnitus causes insomnia, irritability, depression. Researches confirmed the connection between anxiety and impaired concentration and ringing in the ears. Tinnitus can cause a nervous system disorder even in smooth-tempered people. Emotionally labile patients exacerbate the discomfort constantly focusing on the problem. Treatment of tinnitus is an important medical and social task. The method for shaking off stuffiness and ringing in the ear depends on the cause that has provoked this condition.

Treatment of ringing in the ears

Unfortunately, there are no medications able to eliminate ringing in the ears entirely and permanently. When choosing the treatment scheme, the cause of the disease (if it is determined), the degree of hearing impairment, previous therapy, comorbidities.

Treatment of ringing in the ears is limited to the therapy of the underlying disease. Unfortunately, it is often impossible to determine the cause of tinnitus. What to do in case of ringing in the ears and otalgia when the diagnosis is not determined? When tinnitus etiology is not determined, pharmacological therapy (betaserc, tanakan), reflexotherapy, hearing aid, psychotherapeutic sessions are recommended. There is evidence of the efficiency of usage of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants in tinnitus therapy. The result of such a treatment is noticeable reduction of discomfort and patients’ mood improvement.

It is important to know that in case the diagnosis of “cochlear neuritis” has been determined, the success of the treatment depends on the time of its start. That is why you should see a doctor immediately when ringing in the ears arises. Timely therapy is the guarantee of hearing restoration and elimination of obsessional ringing in the ears.

How to treat constant ringing in the ears in case of osteochondrosis? Of course, the treatment of the underlying disease is necessary. Administration of medications prescribed by the doctor, physiotherapy treatment, massage, therapeutic exercises will help to improve the condition and get rid of the ringing.

Arterial hypertension and ringing in the ears

Dizziness and subjective ringing in the ears are often early symptoms of arterial hypertension and atherosclerosis. Patients most often hear the ringing at night, when it is quiet around. It has been noted that diminished hearing develops simultaneously or just after the arising of tinnitus.

Patients should constantly take blood pressure medications in case of ringing in the ears. Generally, treatment of hypertension is not a one-time pills administration according to the principle “when the blood pressure has increased”. If the diagnosis of “arterial hypertension” is determined, a patient should take blood pressure medications daily, for life. Read more about the treatment of arterial hypertension on our website.
