Penectomy

A penectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing part or all of the penis. The main indication for this surgery is penile cancer, which in Ukraine accounts for 2-4% of all tumors of the male genitourinary system. How is penectomy performed?

complete (radical);
partial.

Partial penectomy (or resection of the penis) - involves the removal of the tumor and adjacent tissues with the capture of at least 2 cm from the border of the neoplasm. Most often, this technique is used in the diagnosis of cancer of the glans penis. By removing the head while leaving the barrel, the man can continue to urinate while standing and have sex. He loses the sensitive part of the penis, but at the same time, erectile and ejaculatory functions are preserved.

Radical penectomy - the entire penis is removed, from tip to base. In this case, the patient is either left at least 3 cm of the stump for urination, or the urethrostomy is removed. Sometimes you have to remove the inguinal lymph nodes so that the tumor does not spread to other organs of the small pelvis.

Any intervention is carried out under general anesthesia, in the position of the patient on his back. During the operation, a condom or a finger from a medical glove is put on the affected areas. This procedure is necessary to prevent cancer cells from infecting healthy tissue.
