Nasal lavage according to Proetz
The method of rinsing the nose according to Proetz or "Cuckoo" is a procedure that is indicated in the complex therapy for the treatment of a number of inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx.
When carrying out the "cuckoo" procedure, such conditions are created that ensure safe cleansing of the nasal cavity from pathological discharge (pus) resulting from the inflammatory process, after which the patient can notice a significant normalization of nasal breathing and acceleration of the healing process. Competent and timely washing of the sinuses according to the Proetz method prevents the premature prescription of antibiotic therapy to such patient groups as children, allergy sufferers, pregnant / lactating women.
When is the procedure indicated?
- inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, sphenoiditis, etmoiditis);
- rhinitis of protracted genesis;
- inflammation of the adenoids.

How is the cuckoo nose wash procedure performed?
- Directly by the otolaryngologist, who, in the process of collecting anamnesis, determines the indications and identifies possible contraindications in each case.
- During the examination, the doctor assesses the need to remove the edema by applying drugs to the nasal mucosa (adrenalization).
- The patient in the supine position throws his head back, and the doctor, using a syringe, slowly and smoothly injects a warm, sterile solution into one of the patient's nasal cavity, which is prepared individually for each patient immediately before the procedure.
- At the same time, from the other nostril, using a vacuum suction, the doctor "pumps out" the injected solution together with the pathological discharge. The average session duration is 10-15 minutes, then the procedure is repeated with the other half of the nose. Throughout the entire washing procedure, the patient must, while exhaling, say "cuckoo" - this protects the throat from the ingress of pathological discharge and solution.
- After the treatment, it is recommended not to go outside for another 10-15 minutes, so that the remaining solution is completely drained out, and full nasal breathing is restored.
To achieve the maximum effect of treatment, washing the nasal cavity according to Proetz is prescribed in a course of 5 sessions or more.
What side effects can there be?
ENT - the "cuckoo" procedure can cause the following side effects:
- minor headache;
- short-term ear congestion;
- burning sensation in the nasal cavity.
