Liver resection

Liver cancer is the fifth most common oncopathology in the world in men and the eighth in women, with a high rate of complications and deaths. Metastatic organ damage due to tumors of nearby organs is common. One of the methods of treatment for this disease is surgery - liver resection, which is the removal of part (s) of the liver with tumors. Liver resection in case of metastases in combination with radiation or chemotherapy can increase the survival rate and quality of life of patients. The combination of surgery with radiation and chemotherapy increases the survival rate and improves the quality of life of patients.

Types of liver resection

Liver resections are divided into 2 groups:

Typical (anatomical) resections - which are determined by the removal of a part of the hepatic parenchyma, performed along one or more anatomical slits. To avoid intraoperative blood loss and improve visibility during surgery, the blood vessels that feed the liver are ligated.
Atypical resections, which consist of removing part of the parenchyma without taking into account anatomical gaps. This tactic differs from the previous one in that the tumor is removed blindly, without ligation of the vessels, and the bleeding is stopped during the dissection of the organ along the incision.

The type of intervention is determined by the doctor, taking into account the characteristics of the disease and the severity of clinical manifestations. If surgery is to be performed on a small area, laparoscopy is usually the method of choice. If it is necessary to remove a large area, choose open access.
