Tamponade of the nose

Epistaxis is the most common condition that every person encounters in their life, resulting from injury, damage to the mucous membrane, or bleeding disorders. Nasal tamponade is a medical emergency aimed at stopping profuse nosebleeds when hemostatic drugs are ineffective. For this, special gauze tampons (turundas) are used, which are inserted into the nasal cavity, creating pressure on the walls, mechanically squeezing the affected vessels, making it possible for blood clots to form in the lumen and stop bleeding.

What types of nasal tamponade are there?

There are two types of tamponade:

Anterior tamponade - performed when there is bleeding in the anterior part of the nasal cavity. Tampons are slowly inserted through the nostrils, filling the nasal cavity. The tampon is fixed by applying a special bandage (sling-like).
Posterior tamponade - performed when the anterior tamponade is ineffective in difficult cases when an urgent stop of nosebleeds is required. A catheter is inserted through the nasal cavity, which is taken out through the mouth, after which a gauze swab is fixed to it. The catheter is removed, the tampon is inserted through the mouth into the back of the nasal cavity, compressed and fixed. A bandage is applied.

The posterior tamponade is performed by the most experienced otorhinolaryngologists of our clinic because the manipulation requires highly-trained specialists.

Treatment with antiseptics is mandatory before manipulation.

When is the manipulation indicated?

Indications for tamponade are:

traumatic damage to the nose;
foreign objects of the nasal cavity;

inflammatory lesions of the nasal mucosa;

anatomical deformities of the nose;
frequent use of vasoconstrictor drugs;

after surgery;
oncological diseases of the nasal cavity.

Often, taking narcotic drugs through the nose can cause profuse nosebleeds, which require a nasal tamponade.
