Family medicine is a fairly new medical specialty for Ukraine. It focuses on providing health care services for prevention and treatment of various diseases to all family members, regardless of age.

The task of the family doctor is to perform monitoring of the patient’s health over time providing recommendations on preventive measures and determining treatment tactics, if necessary.

Family medicine is intended to reduce the working load on the secondary health care line, so family doctors make primary diagnosis, provide treatment of many diseases and, if necessary, refer patients to medical specialists. But even after counseling of a medical specialist, it is the family doctors who monitors the course of the disease over time, especially if it is a chronic disease, and keeps track of patient’s condition for timely provision of medical care.

Thus, a family doctor is a general practitioner who can provide advice on breastfeeding and vaccination of children, recommendations on disease prevention and lifestyle change to all family members at different stages of life, as well as manage and monitor aged patients with chronic diseases. The family doctor makes diagnosis, provides treatment and prevention of infectious diseases through vaccination and advises on strengthening immunity. He makes initial examination of a patient and prescribes appropriate treatment.
