Rhinoplasty

Depending on the method, there are open and closed rhinoplasty. Open plastic surgery is performed when access to the cartilage or bone tissue of the patient's nose is required. During open access, an incision is made in the skin of the columella - the part of the skin located between the nostrils, the tip of the nose is pushed up, and a full overview of the surgical picture for the surgeon. Closed access differs in that all incisions are made inside the nose. This type of rhinoplasty does not leave visible scars, does not injure the skin between the nostrils, but allows you to perform the most complex manipulations with the internal tissues of the nose.

Among other types of rhinoplasty are:

• Rhinoseptoplasty - the plastic shape of the nose with simultaneous correction of the nasal septum.
• Septoplasty - correction of the exclusively curved nasal septum, without disturbing the external structures of the nose.
• Rhinoplasty with osteotomy - correction of the shape of the nose with the movement of the base bones.
• Rhinoplasty of the tip of the nose - is performed exclusively on the cartilaginous structure.

In addition to traditional surgical plastic surgery of the nose in recent years is actively developing injectable rhinoplasty, which involves the introduction of fillers based on hyaluronic acid. This method of intervention is resorted to if necessary to correct minor defects of the nose: rounding the tip of the nose, changing the shape of the wings of the nose, restoring symmetry, etc.

Indications for rhinoplasty can be divided into medical and aesthetic. Medical indications include congenital anomalies, deformities of the nose after injury, the curvature of the nasal cartilage with difficulty breathing.

At the initial consultation with a plastic surgeon, the patient voices his wishes. The specialist photographs the face from different angles: profile and full face, to then conduct computer simulations and predict the result.

Preparation for the operation itself includes a number of studies, usually include general clinical and biochemical blood tests, coagulation, HIV and hepatitis tests, urine tests, ECG, tomography of the paranasal sinuses. In certain cases, the specialist prescribes additional methods of examination. 2 weeks before the operation, it is recommended to stop taking drugs that affect blood clotting, quit smoking and alcohol. You should not drink any liquid 5 hours before the operation.

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia with the addition of local anesthesia. Access, as well as the plan of operation, is chosen by the plastic surgeon, proceeding from the individual features of the patient. The duration of the operation depends on the complexity but usually does not exceed 2 hours. If part of the procedure is septoplasty, the total time is increased by 30 minutes. Based on the preoperative interview, the plastic surgeon performs either closed or open rhinoplasty, during which the tip of the nose and its bony part is given the desired shape. After the operation, sutures are applied, which fix the tip of the nose in the desired position and are fixed with plaster, metal, or plastic splint. Tampons are inserted into the nose to stop minor postoperative bleeding.

The total rehabilitation period takes about 2 weeks. In the first days, there may be swelling of the face, hematomas, pain. To eliminate these symptoms, the doctor prescribes painkillers. After removing the cast, you can return to your usual lifestyle with some adjustments:

• water procedures are carried out only with warm water;
• it is forbidden to visit the bath and sauna for several weeks;
• it is necessary to limit physical activity and stress;
• it is necessary to completely give up smoking and alcohol consumption for the period of rehabilitation;
• it is recommended to use several pillows during sleep to keep your head up.
