an objective assessment of complaints in occupational pathology or ailments that are associated with environmental influences.

When is the performance of the external respiration function contraindicated?

The study of ERF is safe, therefore there are no absolute contraindications for conducting it. Diagnosis should be performed with caution in the following cases:

with pneumothorax;
in the first 14 days after acute myocardial infarction, after ophthalmic operations and surgical intervention in the abdominal cavity;

with severe ongoing hemoptysis;
in the case of severe bronchial asthma;
if you suspect active tuberculosis or other diseases transmitted by airborne droplets.

The group of relative contraindications includes:

stroke;
angina pectoris or myocardial infarction;

decompensated diseases (heart or pulmonary failure);
arterial hypertension or hypertensive crisis;

the second trimester of pregnancy or first trimester with toxicosis of pregnant women.

How is the preparation of the respiratory function test carried out?

No special preparation for the study of the function of external respiration is required:

before the study, do not smoke, drink caffeinated drinks at least 7-8 hours in advance;

How is respiratory function tested?

ERF is performed quickly and absolutely painlessly. The external respiration test is performed while sitting, the patient needs to straighten his back and slightly raise his head. Diagnosis should be carried out in a stable chair (without wheels) with armrests. When examining pulmonary function, a nasal clip is used. The patient is given a spirometer and a disposable sleeve connected to a breathing tube. The mouthpiece of the spirometer needs to be tightly wrapped around the lips and teeth. Inhale and exhale with maximum force. In this case, the spirometer measures and records the volume and speed of the air passing through the apparatus, as well as a number of other indicators. The procedure is usually repeated twice or thrice to establish the average of all characteristics.
