Consultation with a pediatric urologist is necessary not only in the case of pronounced symptoms, but also for preventive purposes. A number of urological problems and deviations in the development of the baby's genitourinary system can be congenital, therefore, preventive consultations with a specialist are carried out in the first months of a child's life. Most of the congenital anomalies and malformations of the genitourinary system are successfully corrected in childhood.

Some urological diseases can develop in children during their life for various reasons: infection, complications after the flu, hypothermia, and more. Often, the disease is asymptomatic and parents may not immediately notice "problems" in the baby's health. Urological diseases not diagnosed and not promptly cured in childhood can negatively affect the quality of life in adulthood.

In the Dobrobut medical network, a team of experienced professionals will take care of your child's health. Pediatric urologists and nephrologists will help in the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders in the functioning of the kidneys and bladder, infectious diseases of the urinary tract, congenital anomalies in the development of the genitourinary system and external genitalia in a child and other diseases.

A pediatric urologist in the Dobrobut medical network is not just a doctor who diagnoses and treats urological diseases. All our pediatricians have extensive experience in communicating with children, are able to find psychological contact with a child of any age and use modern methods of diagnosis and therapy.

When a pediatric urologist is needed

Considerable part of urologic diseases are congenital. Developmental pathologies of the urogenital system can develop in the mother’s womb. Prenatal diagnostics ultrasonographer will notice such pathologies, first of all. Besides, pathologies of male and female genitalia can manifest at the age of 4 to 5 years, and even later, at the age of 12–15 years.

A child needs a check-up by a pediatric urologist in the following ages:

  • within the first year of life
  • at the age of 3–4 years
  • at the age of 7–9 years
  • at the age of 14 years

At the first scheduled examination, a pediatric urologist will advise parents on how to properly carry out hygienic procedures for the genitals, as well as tell about the peculiarities of the development of the genitourinary system and what problems parents need to pay attention to. Proper intimate hygiene of a child is the prevention of the development of urological diseases, since improper care can lead to various diseases, such as balanoposthitis in boys, as well as cystitis and other diseases in girls.

A child whose parents and/or close relatives have suffered from diseases of urinary bladder and kidneys need a consultation by a pediatric urologist, because some serious pathologies may be hereditary.

Symptoms of urological diseases in children

The most common reasons for contacting a pediatric urologist are changes in urine: parents may notice a cloudy sediment, a change in color from yellow to "dark beer", an unpleasant odor. Disorders of urination, pain during urination, in the lower abdomen, in the lower back, and girls may have discharge from the external genital organs, will "tell" about problems with the kidneys and the bladder.

See a pediatric urologist as soon as possible if your child has:

  • there were pains in the lumbar spine, pains are accompanied by nausea and vomiting
  • discomfort when urinating
  • frequent and painful urination
  • recurrent urinary tract infections are common
  • the urine has an unpleasant odor
  • the pediatrician found changes in the general analysis of urine
  • urinary incontinence
  • the urge to urinate is often repeated or vice versa - the child rarely goes to the toilet
  • when urinating, the child has to push
  • the urine stream is very thin
  • the area of the scrotum is swollen and painful
  • swelling of the genitals is noticeable

Diagnostics

Diagnostics of children's urological diseases in the Dobrobut medical network is carried out using modern laboratory and instrumental technologies. Additional tests may be needed to make an accurate diagnosis and identify the most effective treatment.

Biopsy
CT scan
MRI
Cystoscopy
Ultrasound

Laboratory diagnostics

  • clinical analysis of urine. This method is the main one in the diagnosis of diseases of the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract, as well as other systems and organs. This diagnostic method includes studies of physicochemical, biochemical parameters, microscopy of urinary sediment. Urinalysis is an effective method for diagnosing infections of the genitourinary system.
  • bacteriological culture of urine. It is carried out to identify the causative agent of the infection and determine the level of bacteriuria (bacterial growth) when an infection enters the body.
  • urine microalbumin. This study is carried out to detect albumin (the main proteins of blood plasma) in the urine. It is they who begin to get into the urine of the child with kidney disease.

Instrumental diagnostics

  • Ultrasound diagnostics. Ultrasound examination for diseases of the genitourinary system in children helps to identify many pathological conditions. These are developmental abnormalities, acute and chronic processes, tumors, traumatic injuries, etc. Doppler ultrasound for urological problems will help to identify circulatory disorders in the organs of the genitourinary system, obstacles to the normal outflow of urine, etc.
  • uroflowmetry (determining the rate of urination)
  • Excretory urography . With the help of this X-ray examination, the doctor gets a picture of the condition of the kidneys and urinary tract. The kidneys "know how" to secrete certain x-ray contrast agents that are injected into the body of a small patient. In the course of diagnostics, it is possible to get a complete picture of the release of contrast by the kidneys and its advancement along the ureters. The study is often used for violations of the outflow of urine caused by infection.
  • CT diagnostics . Computed tomography methods in pediatric urology are used to detect neoplasms in the kidneys and adrenal glands, in trauma and inflammatory processes, urolithiasis, etc. If indicated, CT is performed even for newborns. Methods such as CT scintigraphy and CT urography are the most informative in the diagnosis of pathologiststh organs of the genitourinary system.
  • Vocational cystourethrography . This is a radiopaque method for examining the urethra and bladder. With the help of such a study, vesicoureteral reflux is diagnosed, that is, the reverse flow of urine in a child, as well as various abnormalities in the development of the genitourinary system.
  • MRI diagnostics . Magnetic resonance imaging differs from CT in that it is performed using magnetic fields and radio frequency pulses. It is MRI that is prescribed when the results of CT or ultrasound are not enough, and the final diagnosis cannot be made. MRI is used to diagnose a wide range of urological diseases in children: from detecting congenital pathologies to searching for the consequences of injuries and infectious processes.
  • Cystoscopy . This endoscopic method allows the specialist to examine the inner surfaces of the bladder, assess the condition of the mucous membrane, find the cause of the narrowing of the ureter, etc. Cystoscopy in children is used when you need to identify the type of pathology as accurately as possible and quickly diagnose the child.
  • puncture biopsy . With this research method, a microscopic tissue sample is taken for further examination. A doctor may prescribe a biopsy to a child if a malignant or benign tumor is suspected, as well as to confirm or refute inflammatory processes, kidney and bladder pathologies. ProvIn most cases, a biopsy is performed under ultrasound guidance.

Treatment

Children's urological diseases require qualified medical care and an integrated approach to treatment. Medical statistics say that every third child suffers from one or another abnormality in the genitourinary system. Timely correction of pathologies in the development of the genitourinary system, treatment of infectious diseases, the consequences of trauma and other urological problems in children will help eliminate not only the physiological manifestations of the disease, but also solve the problem of psycho-sexual adaptation of a child, and then a teenager in society.

After the diagnosis, the pediatric urologist will draw up an individual treatment plan, which may include drug therapy, and, if necessary, surgical treatment. The complex treatment of urological diseases in children includes rehabilitation, as well as psychological correction. If necessary, your baby will be examined by doctors of related specialties, because often with urological pathologies, children need the help of a pediatric nephrologist, neurologist and psychologist.

Specialists of the Dobrobut medical network work exclusively in accordance with the principles of modern evidence-based medicine and prescribe drugs only with proven efficacy. The treatment of the child must be discussed with his parents.

Urological diseases of children that we treat:

  • urinary tract infections
  • acute cystitis
  • acute / chronic pyelonephritis
  • chronic kidney disease
  • urolithiasis
  • enuresis
  • delayed puberty
  • violation of gender differentiation
  • phimosis
  • functional impairment of urination

For other pediatric urological pathologies that require surgical treatment, experienced urological surgeons will choose the least traumatic method of treatment for the early recovery of the baby. (link to Surgery-urology).
