Biopsy

Biopsy helps to determine the character of a neoformation (malignant or benign).

During the procedure a doctor takes a small sample of tissue from the area where the tumor has been revealed and sends it to a pathologist in the laboratory for examination.

For most of the types of oncological diseases the biopsy is the only way to determine a precise diagnosis. The most common biopsy types include:

• excisional biopsy, when a neoformation is removed completely;
• incisional biopsy, when a small tumor region is taken for the examination;
• fine-needle aspiration biopsy, when a tumor is punctured with a needle and cells are sampled for a cytological examination;
• needle core biopsy is a sampling of a tissue column with a special needle and the tool for a histopathological examination of the material.
