Cancer prevention (cancer prevention)
Oncological diseases represent the group of diseases of similar origin and course and rank second in the world in mortality rate after cardiovascular diseases. Late detection and unavailability of effective treatment in the countries with low living standards are considered the main reasons of heavy mortality in oncology.
The following series of measures are considered the gold standard of successful treatment of oncological diseases and include:
- prevention (information distribution on healthy lifestyle and consequences of bad habits, vaccination);
- screening (preventive diagnostic check-ups and procedures of healthy population for early detection of risks and predispositions to cancer);
- early diagnostics (detection of signs of cancer diseases at early stages, diagnostics of precancerous states included);
- treatment (the series of measures for the treatment of oncological diseases that includes surgical, pharmaceutical and radiation techniques. Often the treatment implies combination of several techniques);
- palliative care (provision of medical aid to oncology patients and psychological support for both patients and their relatives).
The treatment of cancer takes the fifth part of all the measures aimed at reduction in the burden of disease and mortality rate of oncological diseases.
There are two approaches in the world that allow to diagnose oncological diseases in due time:
- early detection: detection of the existing oncological disease at early stages;
- screening: detection of the disease that shows no symptoms yet among the apparently healthy population.
Cancer detection at early stages gives the possibility to provide treatment that, in general, is more effective, less complicated and, as a result, cheaper.
Early detection is targeted at the people with existing symptoms and distinctive signs of cancer. Its aim is to reveal a disease as early as possible, to determine a diagnosis wasted no time and to prescribe a treatment.
The aim of screening is the detection of asymptomatic (symptom-free) cancer or precancerous states of healthy population. The difference between screening and early detection is as follows: screening is indicated for completely healthy people that have indications for the check-up because of their age or genetic factors. If we are talking about early detection, we mean people that already have disturbing symptoms and seek medical advice to control them.
In both cases, oncological diseases can be detected, and the probability that the disease will be at its early stages is much higher. As a consequence, in this particular case a doctor will be able to take all the necessary actions for the treatment of the disease with minimum damage to health and life of a patient.
